Mother’s Day

Oh, what sacrifices our Moms have made for us in our lives.

At different stages in life we view our Mothers in different ways.  As a young child our mother is typically the primary caregiver.  She makes sure we are nurtured, fed, clothed, clean and educated.   As we enter into young adulthood we may rebel against her as she is dishes out advice and restrictions that appear to be harsh, but actually are for our own good.  As we continue through the path of life and become parents ourselves, we suddenly realize that Mom wasn’t so bad after all, she was actually a genius and she’s one of the few people you trust your children with.  In most cases we pattern our parenting styles on what our own Mom did.

As we move into middle age the tables begin to turn a bit and we sometimes have to assume the role of “parent” to our parent.  We may be called upon to provide care for a Mom that is ill, provide financial assistance to a Mom that is living on a fixed income or provide emotional assistance by just being there to talk and visit.  Whatever the case may be, take a few moments away from your busy schedule and reach out to your Mom on this Mothers Day.  In fact let’s not wait until Sunday why not give her a call right now.   If possible spend some time with your Mom.

Time can be the most expensive and cherished gift of all.

Happy Mother’s Day to All!!

“Old Skool” is here to stay!

Many of us have very fond memories of “our” music, the games we played and the discipline that was dished out “back in the day”.  Some of these memories are bittersweet; they make us laugh and cry.
Let’s go back and share some memories.  What was your favorite song, artist or group, fashion statement or game you liked to play as a child?
I am very fond of the 80’s.  Wow, so many things occurred in my life during that period – I graduated from high school, went to College, contemplated dying my hair navy blue, lost my Gangan and Woodie (my beloved great grandparents that raised me), got married, had children and grooved to all that great music the 80’s offered.
Did we not jam to the likes of the King of Pop Mr. Michael Jackson and the ever edgy Prince.  Let’s not forget Whitney Houston who was, in my opinion, the best female vocalist around.  We jammed with timeless bands such as Cameo, The Gap Band and Atlantic Star.  Let’s not leave out the girl pop groups and artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Madonna and Blondie.  I could go on and on.  I love this stuff.  Let’s hear it for Old Skool!!
Share your memories...

Hello World

Welcome to the launch of my premiere blog, Baby Boomers United!!

My name is Tanja and I am a baby boomer.  I'm 46 years old, I live in Ohio and I studied gerontology at Bowling Green State University.  The first part of my career I worked in healthcare, both long term care and acute care, for over 15 years.  My most recent employment has been as Benefits Administrator, administrating employee medical, dental, disability, retirement plans, etc. I've been at this for over 13 years now.  I am so excited to share information that I am hopeful you will find useful, sometimes humorous and always pertinent.  I invite you to comment and share your opinions and experiences as well.

Let's get started, what is a Baby Boomer?  Demographers, sociologists and the media define baby boomers as those born from 1946 - 1964. In 2011, that would make us between 46 and 64 years old.

What makes us unique?  Just to mention a few things, we were the fastest growing segment of the population for many years. As a result we have made many changes to life as we once knew it; due to our sheer numbers we are depleting a very old Social Security System therefore we must find other vehicles for retirement savings and we are responsible for the growth of certain industries such as retirement communities and medications that deal specifically with illnesses common to older people. Take a look at the media and see for yourself how much time and money is spent advertising to us. We are living much longer than previous generations and our families are often times dispersed over the country or even the world.  We no longer have our children living in a community near us where they can help us as we get older.  All these things and more are why we have specific and unique needs.

If you are a Baby Boomer I urge you to follow my blog.  You're guaranteed to find helpful informatinon as it progresses over the coming days and months. Again, I welcome any comments.  I hope you enjoy my blog.

Y'all come back now, you hear.
